What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is more than a method of pain relief. It focuses on improving the overall well-being of a patient and is used to treat people with a wide variety of illnesses. It has been practised in China and other Eastern countries for thousands of years.
-
According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is linked to the body's motivating energy or Qi which moves in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin
-
Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities – you may have heard of Yin and Yang
-
When these become unbalanced it can result in illness
-
By inserting fine needles into these channels of energy, an acupuncturist can stimulate the body’s own healing response and help restore its natural balance
The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors. These include emotional states such as anxiety, stress, anger, fear, grief, poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, poisons and trauma.
The aim of acupuncture is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.
During your first consultation, your practitioner will take your pulse on both wrists and examine your tongue as well as observe and ask you questions. They will be looking for a wider pattern of disharmony rather than isolated symptoms. A diagnosis and treatment plan will be made which is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine theory.
Treatment involves the insertion of fine disposable, sterilised acupuncture needles, and may include massage, moxibustion and cupping. You may feel a light pinprick on insertion and some sensation of dullness or heaviness. Needles are left in place for about 20 minutes whilst you rest.
How often will I need treatments?
The number of treatments will vary from person to person but it is usual to visit once or twice a week to start with.
-
Sometimes the effects of the treatment may be dramatic, and only a couple of visits are required.
-
Sometimes the effects are more subtle which may necessitate treatment over a number of months.
-
Progress often depends on how long you have been unwell, your age and condition.
How safe is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is generally very safe. The needles used are pre-packed and sterilised, and used once only, before being disposed of safely.
Our clinic supervisors are experienced practitioners and are members of the BAcC. Codes of practice and ethics, which require a high standard of professionalism, are observed.
Reactions to Acupuncture
Serious side-effects are very rare (with less than 1 per 10,000 treatments). Most patients find treatment relaxing and restful, leaving them slightly tired but with no significant side-effects.
